Engineer, racing driver and writer. Robert MacGregor Innes Ireland was born in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, and was the son of a Scottish vet. He joined the Army, was commissioned and was attached to the Parachute Regiment. Raced in Formula 1 between 1959 and 1966, winning the 1961 US Grand Prix. Shortly afterwards he was dismissed by team boss Colin Chapman and his seat taken by Jim Clark. He never raced at the very highest level again. After his racing career he took up journalism. After his death in 1993 in Reading, his widow scattered his ashes on hills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at Wester Ross, NW Highlands of Scotland. A stone cairn was erected and a commemorative plaque attached. Innes Ireland had an out-going devil-may-care attitude to life, and was a noted raconteur.
