From Betty's obituary at The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, CA:
Elizabeth L. B. "Betty" Hewitt, age 96, died peacefully of natural causes on February 21, 2011 at Carmel Valley Manor. She was born June 15, 1914 to Major General Frank Crandall Bolles and Irene Henrietta Hobby Petit in Watertown, NY. As part of a military family, Betty and her four siblings lived all over including the Presidio of San Francisco, Hawaii when it was just a territory and the Philippines. In 1932, Betty graduated from Ferry Hall Girls School in Lake Forest, IL. She met her future husband, Robert Augur Hewitt, a West Point graduate, when he was assigned to be her father's military aide-de-camp. After a 14-month courtship, they were married on November 21, 1933 in Ft. Sheridan, IL. They had two children, Robert and Suzanne. Betty and Bob shared a deep love for one another during their long marriage of 66 years. They traveled extensively throughout Robert's successful military career as a Major General living in Hawaii, Germany and Washington, DC. After retiring from the Army in 1967, Betty and Bob settled down in Kansas City, MO. They were devastated by the loss of their only daughter, Suzanne, to diabetes in 1968. When Bob died in 1999, Betty moved to Carmel Valley Manor to be closer to her family. Betty was a very active, engaging woman who was interested in painting, needlepoint, golf, playing pool and reading mysteries. During her last few years, Betty organized a small card shop at the Manor, the proceeds from which she donated to the Carmel Valley Fire Department. She belonged to the congregation at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Carmel Valley. Betty is survived by her 5 loving grandchildren, [names omitted]; 13 great-grandchildren; her brother, John; and her 2 nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her children, Robert and Suzanne; her sister, Henrietta; and her brothers, Frank and Seaman. Betty's life was characterized by her devotion to her husband and love for her children and grandchildren as well as her extended family and friends. She will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
