Patrick Hickey was born in Ireland in 1840. As a young boy, he and his family settled in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. In 1861 he volunteered to fight for the Union and mustered into The 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company F, "Birney's Zouaves" with his best friend William J. Wray. He was mustered in on August 2nd 1861 at The Arsenal in Philadelphia. On December 13th 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg he was wounded in the right arm by a bullet that struck his friend Wray in the eye. Hickey rushed to save his friends life. On the way to the rear he ran into Surgeon William Roller of the 23rd PA who did what he could for the wounds. He and Wray were taken to a Hospital in Washington D.C. and given furloughs. Wray 60 Days and Hickey 30. Wray refused his 60 day furlough because he wanted to be with his pal. The surgeon was so moved, he gave both boys 60 days. It was well known that The 23rd PA always stuck together. Patrick returned to the ranks again and stayed with the regiment until its muster out on September 8th 1864. He was discharged honorably and returned to Philadelphia. In 1873 he moved to Kansas City Missouri. He worked at several Hotels and Saloons and resided at several Hotels between 1873 and 1885. His occupation in 1873 was a "runner" (Delivery Man), for the Coates House (Hotel). He was a barkeeper at The East Stanton Saloon in 1876 and a bartender at The Laclede Saloon in 1878. In 1883-1884, just before his death, he owned/ operated a Saloon at 1330 West 9th Street. He married a woman named Mary who became his wife. He died on October 18th 1885 at the age of 45 years. The cause of death was bronchitis and Alcoholism. A service was held at the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception and he was buried at Mount St. Mary's Cemetery. He is buried in Section B, Lot 35, and Grave 2. The Death notice in the November 19th 1885 Kansas City Times reads: HICKEY: on October 18th at his residence, 1718 West 9th Street. Patrick Hickey in the 45th year of his age. The funeral will take place from the Church of The Annunciation on Tuesday at 9 O Clock, Father Dalton Officiating.
