Declining health required Gerrit to move to Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville on January 20, 2006.He moved to the Hospice of Pella Comfort House on April 5.It was from there that Gerrit went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 10, 2006; just three hours before his 86th birthday.
Gerrit was baptized in the Eddyville Christian Reformed Church.He became a member of Peoria Christian Reformed Church, the Sully Reformed Church, and Trinity Reformed Church in Pella.Gerrit was also active in the Taintor Community Church and helped with construction of the new church at its present location.Gerrit loved the Lord, his family and friends.He and Kay enjoyed reading their Dutch Bible in addition to regular daily devotions.They instilled their strong faith in God in their children and families.
Gerrit had a special gift for calling and visiting family, friends and residents of hospitals and nursing homes in the area.In his younger years, he was an excellent Lynnville softball player; playing third base on the Lynnville Softball team.Gerrit enjoyed playing ball with the adults and kids at family gatherings and teachings his own children and grandchildren to play his favorite sport.In 1992, Gerrit and Kay joined their children and families for a memorable trip to the Netherlands; where both of their parents were born. Gerrit was especially pleased to see the place where the Bandstra family name was selected in a house on the Bantpolder known as the Bandhuis.
