British/Canadian Lieutenant General. He rose in rank to become a senior commander of the British Indian Army, and later a Canadian lieutenant-general. The son of a British Army officer, he was educated at Preston Grammar School and Uppingham School. In 1873 he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in the 59th Regiment of Foot. His military career spanned 45 years and during that time he served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, the Mahdist War (Sudan), and World War I, and held the commands of the Chief of the General Staff, India (World War I Mesopotamian Campaign), the 7th Indian Division, and the Chief of the General Staff, Canada. In 1902 he received the Companion Order of the Bath, followed in 1908 with the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George and in 1916 he was created Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He died at the age of 85.
