Spanish Monarch. He reigned as King of Navarre, Castile and Count of Aragon. He was the son of Garcia IV Sanchez, King of Navarre and his wife Jimena Fernandez, daughter of Fernando Vermudez, Count of Cea, of the Asturian Royal House. Succeeding his father in Navarre in 1000, he annexed the county of Sobrarbe-Ribagorza 1016 to 1019. He became Count of Castile in 1026 by virtue of his marriage to Munia Mayor, daughter of Sancho Garcia, Count of Castile. He became Count of Aragon in 1030, and his armies occupied the Kingdom of Leon in 1034, thus uniting almost all of northern Christian Spain. He moved his royal residence from Pamplona to Najera. At his death his empire was undone by division between his sons: Fernando I receiving Castile and later by marriage, Leon; Garcia V Sanchez receiving Navarre; Gonzalo Sanchez receiving Sobrarbe-Ribagorza; and his illegitimate son by Sancha de Aybar, Ramiro I, receiving the County of Aragon now raised to a kingdom in his favor.
