Sarah Bostick Ingram Cornelius
~Sarah Bostick married Council Brewton (Bruton) Ingram in Richmond County Georgia in 1827. They lived in Jefferson County, Georgia before moving to Coffey County, Tennessee. After her marriage to Councill she accepted Christ and join the Methodist Episcopal Church and remained a faithful and devoted Christian throughout her life. Council died a young man leaving her with a family. She and her children went to live with her father.
~A runaway slave from Blount County was instrumental in changing Sarah's name to Cornelius and bringing her to Alabama. William (Billy) Cornelius went to Tennessee in pursuit of a slave that had been apprehended at Manchester, Tennessee. He stopped at an inn that was operated by John G. Bostic and met Sarah, the innkeeper's daughter. She must have had a strong faith in God and trust in Mr. Cornelius. She forsook her father's home and married William Cornelius in Franklin County Tennessee on January 13, 1846. She and her five children, six through 16, came with William to Blount County by covered wagon and settled in Murphree's Valley in the area that today is Oneonta. He was appointed guardian of the children in June 1846. The 1850 census list the children as children of William Cornelius.
~Sarah must of been a remarkable lady who along with others of her day endured hardships and suffered much sadness. Her three older sons served in the cause of the Confederacy. Her son Rufus lost his life during the war and her sons-in-laws Lt. Miles Major and Stephen Murphree died later as result of the war. Her husband, Billy, died in 1864. Two of her children moved to Texas.
~These children were well known in their day and married into respectable and honorable families.
