He was a hard-working man, a good husband, and father, and was loved by all who knew him. He was married to the former Hannah Guilliams, daughter of a Civil War veteran Laban Guilliams, who fought for the union.
He was working in a coal mine in 1926 when he was struck by falling debris. Though seriously wounded, he recovered, but finally died as a result of his old injury 5 years later.
Father-In-Law: Laban Guilliams
Son: David Anderson, Jr.
Grandson: Robert Clifton Anderson
In the photo above, David Anderson, Sr. is holding Robert Clifton Anderson, his grandson on a visit to Philadelphia on September 9, 1923. The baby's father David Anderson, Jr. died the year before in Wheeling, West Virginia. The baby was raised by David Sr. and his wife Hannah for 9 years until he was 11 years old. Robert Clifton died in 2007 at the age of 87.
Sarah E. Dickey is also buried with David and Hannah. Sarah was Hannah's sister. Sarah is buried with David and Hannah because Sarah's husband, Alfred, was an African-American and had to be buried in the African-American section of the cemetery for that reason. Such was segregation at the time.
