Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. On July 19, 1861, he enlisted as a Private in the 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Rising through the ranks to Captain on General Meredith's staff, he distinguished himself at Cemetery Hill, in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. His 7th Wisconsin bore its share in the battle with characteristic gallantry, and suffered severely. During the action, he seized the colors of a Pennsylvania regiment, attempted to rally them back into the fight, but it was in vain, and although he made a conspicuous mark by this action, he retired his men unharmed. He went on to be Colonel in command of the 7th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and for his meritorious leadership was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. He mustered out of the Regular Army with his regiment on July 3, 1865 and relocated to the west where he engaged in land management for the rest of his life.
