Actor, Film Director. He was a prolific actor of the silent film era having appeared in over 200 films. He will be best remembered for his role as 'Prince Belshazzar' in director D.W. Griffith's historical epic film "Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout The Ages (1916). The film which also stars Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, and Robert Harron, tells the story of a poor young woman, separated by prejudice from her husband and baby, who is interwoven with tales of intolerance from throughout history. He had also worked previously with director D.W. Griffith on some earlier films including, "The Squaw's Love" (1911), with Mabel Normand, and "The Lesser Evil" (1912), with Blanche Sweet, Mae Marsh, and Edwin August. He was born in London, England, on June 2, 1879, and he had an illustrious military career before turning to a career in acting. He was a member of the Royal Horse Guards (or The Royal Regiment of Horse Guards) and served with them in the British Army from 1899 to 1903. He also served in South Africa during the Second Boer War from July 1900 to November 1900. For his military service, he was awarded the prestigious Queen's South Africa Medal (is a British campaign medal awarded to British and Colonial military personnel, and to civilians employed in an official capacity, who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa) with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal. He then traveled to Canada in April of 1918 and enrolled in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (or CEF) and was assigned to the 34th Fort Garry Horse Depot Squadron in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, as an instructor. He was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant because of his previous military service and military experience. During his military career, he had become interested in acting and he began appearing in films and on stage. He traveled extensively between England, Canada, and the United States, making his films. He made his actual debut in another one of director D.W. Griffith's films, the comedy short, "Smoked Husband" (1908), which also starred Florence Lawrence, George Gebhardt, Linda Arvidson, Robert Harron, and John R. Cumpson. In his off-screen life he was known as George Hargreaves. He was married to Leila Edna Halstead Paget (1884-1972), from 1916 until his death. The couple had no children. His career was tragically cut short when he passed away on October 8, 1919, at the age of 40, at the Manitoba Military Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, after contracting a rare form of malarial fever. Following his death, he was laid to rest in the Military Section at Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His wife Leila passed away on March 23, 1972, at the age of 88, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and was buried at the Royal Oak Burial Park in that city.
