He worked as a farm laborer and began to accumulate land over time. He eventually established a good sized working farm to earn a living. In 1865 he met and married Mary Elizabeth Passmore a native of Oshawa, Canada. Robert Benns became a United States citizen in 1860. He lived to be 80 years of age.
