Vera Aloma Whitley McCarty, noted Realtor and civic leader, 95, died peacefully at her home in Richardson, Texas on February 21, 2006 ... Born October 5, 1910 in Cherokee, Texas, she moved to Dallas in 1940 with her husband J.W. (Jack) McCarty. She is survived by her two sons, H. D. McCarty and his wife Shirley of Fayetteville, Ark. and J.P. McCarty of Richardson and her daughter J.D. Vaughan of Plano, 7 grand-children, 19 great grand-children and her sister Helen Varney of Richardson. She founded McCarty-Herndon Realtors in 1953 at what is now the intersection of Forest Lane and N. Central Expressway while her husband built and established Richardson's Golden Eagle Restaurant. She pioneered residential real estate sales in the early 1950's and introduced Multiple Listing Service (MLS) to Richardson. She served as a director on the Greater Dallas Board of Realtors and received the GDBR's prestigious Easterwood Cup award. She was president of the Dallas Chapter of Women's Council Of Realtors, and served as the organization's national president in 1974. The Dallas chapter named her Woman Of The Year in 1975. Her civic accomplishments were broad and many. She became active in the Richardson Chamber Of Commerce in 1954 and served as a director for several years. In 1975 she was the first woman to receive the chamber's Citizen Of The Year award. She was a charter member of the Richardson B&PW Club, past president of the Dallas Zonta Club, was instrumental in establishing the Richardson YWCA and a member of the Texas DAR. She helped found the Richardson Symphony Orchestra in the late 1960's and established the Young Artist Competition Scholarship Award which is named after her. She was also an avid genealogist, and a fifth-generation Texan. Vera will be deeply missed by the family she loved, her dear friends and her community. Those of us who loved her are grateful for her remarkable life.
