Add PhotosThe First Presbyterian Church of Southwark was established in the winter of 1818-1819 as a German Presbyterian church, holding services for a time first in the Southwark Commissioners' Hall, and subsequently in the building belonging to the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal congregation. Incorporating on January 17th, 1821 and switching to English language services, the bought a lot of ground at sheriff's sale on the south side of German Street (now Fitzwater), between Second and Third, on September 10th, 1825 to erect their own house of worship in the midst of what was then a field.
A large church was eventually erected to the designs of architect John Sloan, and from 1840 through about 1855 it was a large and popular church. But by the end of the 19th century, the congregation had declined, and so on in December 1891, the congregation voted to unite and transfer over to that of the Old Pine Street congregation and sell the building. The church building was later sold to the Philadelphia Archdiocese and now serves as Saint Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
A small churchyard once held the remains of prominent pastor Reverend Albert Judson, whose grave was marked by a large obelisk after his death in 1839, and other members of the congregation. On May 26th, 1856, Reverend Judson's remains were removed to Laurel Hill Cemetery. No trace of the burial ground remains.
