Add PhotosThe Mutual Family Burial Ground Association of the City and County of Philadelphia was organized in 1826, when a group of people met at the New Market Inn in mid-July 1826 "for the laudable purpose of forming a mutual association, without any exception or distinction on account of differences of religious tenets to economize the heavy expense of attending the sepulchral ground for an internment, and to insure to every member a lot or piece of ground of equal size to him and his heirs forever to be reserved as a family cemetery." The Society formally incorporated on December 21, 1826.
In 1827, a lot of ground on the south side of Prime Street (now Washington Avenue), below Tenth Street purchased from Elizabeth Iseminger for use as a cemetery. Used continuously for nearly 100 years, the burial ground was vacated in 1923 and interments were subsequently removed, largely to Forest Hills Cemetery in Huntingdon Valley, Montgomery County.
