The best way to find the cemetery is to use the GPS coordinates. The road is paved the whole way. It starts as a narrow divided highway with a center strip, then a 1.5 lane highway with no center stripe. Finally it becomes a single lane pave road with some places where people can pass.
In Athens, WV proceed down East Vermillion Street to the entrance to Concord University. Past this point the road becomes the Red Sulphur Turnpike. Take the turnpike down the hill for 4.4. miles when you come to a sign with an arrow pointing straight ahead to Hilltop Road. The Red Sulpher Turnpike takes a sharp turn to the right at this point and and goes downhill. Stay on the Turnpike for another 3.9 miles (total milage of 8.3 miles). Just before this point the road will start up the hill and there will be a modern log home on the left. This is the owner's house. At 8.3 miles there will be a locked gate on the right side of the road and a wide spot on the left where you can park. The cemetery is up the steep, rutted farm road past the locked gate.
I am told by an older relative who lived there during the depression that there were never more than nine graves in this family cemetery. Over the years it has been called the Crawford Cemetery, the Crawford -Shannon Cemetery, and now the
Caperton-Crawford Cemetery.
