Lost Baptist Cemetery
Established: 1848
Burials indexed: 2 (1848-1849)
Baptist Cemetery was located on Lemp Street near Cherokee in the City of St. Louis.
The Missouri History Museum lists a Baptist Cemetery at the Corner of Cherokee Street and Lemp Avenue. According to the museum records the cemetery opened in 1862 and was closed in 1879. According to Compton and Dry, in 1875 all but one corner of the intersection of Cherokee Street and Lemp Avenue were occupied. The only open lot at the intersection is where the Lemp Grand Hall, once the Lemp Brewery Stables and Carriage House stand today. The Lemp Carriage House and Stables were built in 1895 and the buildings have no basement. There is also no record that the bodies in the cemetery were ever relocated. Most likely the head stones were knocked over and the buildings were built on top of the abandoned cemetery.
