The cemetery is the oldest Jewish burial ground in South Bend, having been established in 1859 by the Hebrew Society of Brotherly Love. The society originally bought land for a cemetery along the St. Joseph River near Niles Avenue. In 1883, the land on Miami Street was purchased, and the graves were moved to the new site. In 1999, the cemetery was incorporated into the operations of Temple Beth-El. The functions of the cemetery are handled by the Temple Office Manager.



The cemetery is located in South Bend in Portage Township (W half of the NW quadrant of the SW quadrant of Section 18 Township 37N Range 3E) on the southeast corner of the intersection of Miami Street and Oak Park Court north of the adjacent Bowman Cemetery.



Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 3, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2007), gives the primary cemetery name as Rose Hill Cemetery with an alternate name of Jewish Cemetery.

The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-71-52 (Rose Hill).

The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (IHSSI) survey number for Rose Hill Cemetery is 141-597-21318 with the dataset compiled in 2006.
