Carl Ernst Groschke was born in Germany in 1835 and emigrated to Texas in 1847 at age 11 with his parents and two siblings. The Groschke family were some of the first settlers in Bear Creek in the 1840's. They laid claim to three 160-acre homesteads on vacant land. Indians brought wild game to the home to barter for other foods in the mid to late 1800's. Carl married Dorothea Hillendahl in 1858 and they had 12 children.
Carl served in the Confederacy during the Civil War, in the 4th Texas Field Battery, and the 1st Texas Heavy Artillery Regiment. He saw action in the Vicksburg and Red River campaigns. Carl rose to the rank of Sergeant and returned home after the war in 1865.
Carl lived on this tract of land until he died in 1917. The land passed on to Carl's son, George (1873-1945), who ran a dairy farm there. When the Army took over his land in the 1940's for a flood control reservoir, George committed suicide by gunshot to the head, depressed about the loss of his wife in 1941, and the loss of his family's land.
The family cemetery on the property contains:
Carl Ernst Groschke, 17 January 1835 - 23 July 23 1917
Dorothea "Doris" Hillendahl Groschke, 14 Feb 1838 - 26 May 1915
Children:
Ernst Groschke 18 Feb 1860 - 1922
Gustav "August" Groschke, 23 Dec 1877 - 14 Mar 1903
One rusted metal marker indicates the presence of a fifth grave, name unknown. Groschke family descendants have made references to unmarked graves in the cemetery belonging to members of the Koch and Gastmann families and a Groschke infant.
Additional Groschke's are buried in the Groschke Family Cemetery 1 mile to the west, cemetery ID 1989449; the Koch-Schmidt Cemetery 2 miles to the southwest, cemetery ID 2258180; and the Bear Creek Cemetery 1 mile to the south, cemetery ID 2294641.
