Add PhotosOriginally populated by Scandinavian immigrants, the unincorporated settlement rapidly developed into a multi-ethnic community, with its own school district from 1905-1948; a multi-denominational church and later, a Scandinavian Lutheran church; its own cemetery in 1907; and various homes and businesses.
Following the onset of World War II, most populous area of San Fernando was appropriated in 1943 by the United States Government for the necessary location of a Naval Air Center and the residents and businesses compelled to relocate. The last vestige of the community, its public school, was consolidated with Ricardo Independent School District in 1948.
Although 13 gravesites are marked by upright stones, the remainder are unmarked and the exact plots are unknown. All names listed on this website have come from Texas State Bureau of Health Death Certificates or information transcribed from existing gravestones.
