Alexa, Aleksa (same family)

The family name Alexa or Aleksa originated with the immigrant Michael Aleksa. Since the name was anglicized at Ellis Island, there had been controversy (to say the least) among the 5 sons born to him. John, Anthony, and Walter all spelled the surname "Alexa" which is the "americanized" version, and Stanley and Joseph chose to stay with Aleksa. The controversy comes from the fact that "Michael" (actually Maciej) came from Lithuania when it was under Russian domination, and the Russian Cyrillic alphabet has no letter X. I clearly remember the heated discussions over our name at family gatherings when I was a child, LOL. So, despite the variation, all Alexas and Aleksas are the sons of Maciej Aleksa (probably shortened at Ellis Island from Aleksandrovich), and all the Alexas and Aleksas in Erie, PA are related in some way. We are NOT related to the Aleksiks involved with the Museum (I get that a lot!).
