A Virtual Cemetery created by Janet A Willis Weidner

Willis Cemetery (George W. & Annie Curtis)

This Virtual Cemetery will bring together the names of the parents (George W. and Annie Melvina Cook Willis) and their 11 children and the spouses of these children for reference. Both parents are buried in the Kirwin Cemetery, Phillips County, Kirwin, Kansas. Nine of the 11 children are buried there, too, along with the spouses of most of these children. George W. and Annie Cook Willis were the father and mother of my grandfather, U. S. Grant Willis, my Dad's father. U. S. Grant Willis married my grandmother, Grace Brewer Willis, on January 1, 1912, in Abilene, Kansas, following their graduations from Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas. The 11 children of George W. and Annie Cook Willis were Adelbert, Phoebe, Alfred (Fred), Flora, Grace, Ruby, U. S. Grant, Henry, Thomas, Garnett, and Paul. Their spouses included Hattie Cushman, Thomas E. Scott, Alice Wyrill, Robert D. Morse, Jesse Ragsdale, James Arthur Stagg, Grace Brewer, and Dorothy Cogswell. Grandpa Grant died when my Dad, Warren W Willis, was 16 years old so I never met him. Grandma Grace died when I was 11 years old and I do have fond memories of her. Grandpa Grant's and Grandma Grace's farm lay just below the Kirwin Cemetery. My parents, Warren W Willis and Helene Jensen Willis, agreed to be buried among the Willis family in the Kirwin Cemetery. Dad passed away on August 3, 2013, at age 90 yrs.-8 mos and Mom on October 28, 2014, at age 90 yrs-2 mos. Memorial services for each were attended at the cemetery by five of their six children, eight of their 14 grandchildren, and eight of their 25 great grandchildren at this cemetery. Friends and other relatives paid their respects as well.Another Virtual Cemetery by the name of Willis Cemetery (U. S. Grant & Grace Brewer Willis) will show the names of the children of Grant and Grace as well as of their spouses, my aunts and uncles, and my Dad's brothers and sisters. U. S. Grant and Grace Brewer Willis are buried in the Kirwin Cemetery, Phillips County, Kansas, as are two of their five children and their spouses: Jane Willis Swartz, Roy Swartz, Warren W. Willis and Helene Jensen Willis. A special thanks from my family to the local residents of the Kirwin area who maintain this cemetery; to Barbara Bowman, a contributor to this website who has typed up and maintained the Willis genealogy so capably for us over the years; and to Aunt Jane Willis Swartz and her family for visiting the cemetery and maintaining the headstones so often and keeping up the family history. Mary Grace Swartz Elliott, Jane and Roy Swartz's oldest daughter, has done a great deal to carry on at the cemetery since her parents' deaths, too. Aunt Ann Willis Gaumer Dimond maintained the Willis genealogy so well until her death in 2003. She also had a wonderful collection of family photos - many of them labeled - that have contributed to our genealogy and story. Dad (Warren) felt compelled to keep the information up-to-date until his death and I was very happy to assist him with this. I pledge to continue to do so for as long as I am able.- Janet Willis Weidner - 6/11/15 - Colorado Springs, CO - [email protected]
