Ford's Theatre Tragedy

On June 9, 1893, 490 government employees, most of them doing clerical work, were working for the United States War Department in the building that was once known as Ford's Theatre, in Washington, D.C. Due to the removal of portions of the building's foundation during renovation, and the excessive weight of the military service records being stored above, two floors of the building collapsed, killing eighteen men, and wounding another 73, of which five would eventually succomb to their wounds. Ford's Theatre, was of course, the same building in which the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was assasinated by the actor John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865.
