Bio

Together with my father, Francis Thorp, mother Audrey Thorp, and brothers Anthony and David Michael, I lived in Kenya from 1955 to 1961 between the ages of 5 and 11. Mum was head caterer at the then Kenya Girls High School and after Dad left the army (Glosters Regiment) he worked for Motor Mart and Exchange in Nairobi.

I went to school at the Nairobi Primary School and was a cub with the 96th Nairobi Scout Group. We would go for days out in the Nairobi Game Park or up to the Ngong hills in our Volkswagen Beetle, and for longer breaks into the Aberdare National Park. Our main holidays were taken on the coast near Malindi.

We returned to the UK in August 1961 on board the SS Iberia, and after a short spell in Watford we moved to Taunton in the West Country where I went to Huish's Grammar School. I went to UWIST university in Cardiff where I studied Town Planning. I worked with both Derby City Council and Derbyshire Dales District Council before becoming a town planning consultant working from home for 17 years. I retired from work in 2017. I now live near Derby with my wife Judith. We have twin daughters Emily and Joanna.
