James Barton White, 78, of 725 30th St. Drive SE, a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident, died Saturday in a Cedar Rapids hospital following a brief illness.
Born July 11, 1900, in Cedar Rapids, he was married to the former Carrie C. Schnepf on Feb. 13, 1920, in Marion. She died in 1970. Mr. White was a fireman on the Cedar Rapids Fire Department for 33 years until his retirement in 1955. He was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars, Hanford Post No. 5 of the American Legion and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis White of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Shepard of Nokomis, Fla.; one son, James W. of LaCrosee, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Turner Chapel East by the Rev. David N. Roth of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery. Military services will be held at the funeral home by Hanford Post No. 5. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Tuesday.
