United States Army General, September 11th Terrorist Attack Victim. He held the rank of Lieutenant General and was serving as the United States Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia when he was killed when Al-Qaeda terrorists flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the western side of the building on September 11, 2001. A Vietnam War veteran who had been awarded the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Service Medal, he had headed the "Army of One" recruitment campaign that was initiated in 2000. When he died in the terrorist attacks, he became the highest-ranking United States Military officer to die by the actions of enemy foreigners since United States Army Lieutenant General Simon Boliver Buckner Jr. was killed during the Battle of Okinawa in June 1945 during World War II. Lieutenant General Maude was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. His name can be found on Panel S-74, South Pool, of the National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center site, New York City, New York, and on a memorial bench at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
