U.S. Congressman. As an adult, he was successful in banking, mercantile and agricultural pursuits. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. As a Congressman, he appointed Henry Ossian Flipper to the U.S. Military Academy and Flipper went on to become the first black person to graduate from West Point. After leaving Congress, he resumed his previous business interests until his death at age 66.
