Donald Wallace Bletchly enlisted the Australian Army Reserve, then known as the Citizens Military Forces (CMF) or the Militia on 8 January 1940. The CMF was a part time force and on 19 September 1941, his unit was mobilised for Full Time Duty. He was commissioned lieutenant in May 1943 shortly before embarking for duty in New Guinea. He returned to Australia in May 1944 and embarked with the 15th Australian Infantry Battalion for service on Bougainville in November 1944. For service in the Bougainville campaign he was Mentioned in Despatches. On 7 January 1946 he was discharged from the Army. In the Queen's Birthday 1995 Honours List, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia ‘In recognition of service to the plywood and timber industry and to the 15th Battalion AMF’.
