Australian soldier in both world wars. Son of Joseph and Annie Bertwistle. He had previously served two years with the 7th Battalion, Citizens Military Forces before enlisting at Clayfield, Brisbane with the Australian Imperial Force on October 13, 1916. Bertwistle was allotted as reinforcement to the 42nd Australian Infantry Battalion with service number 2771 and after initial training in Australia embarked at Sydney on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on December 23, 1916. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on March 3, 1917 for further training but was hospitalised with appendicitis but complications saw him returned to Australia where he was discharged on February, 3, 1918. During the Second World War Bertwistle served from September 8, 1941 until September 24, 1942 with Northern Command Canteen Services.
