First World War Australian soldier. Arklay was working as a cold storage hand, living in Cornwall Street, South Brisbane, Queensland when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Brisbane on August 28, 1915. Arklay, service number 12452, was posted to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) as a reinforcement gunner. Following initial training in Australia he embarked with other reinforcements from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on April 9, 1916 for Egypt. Arklay left Alexandria, Egypt on May 29 and arrived at Marseilles, France on June 6 where he entrained for Etaples in northern France. Following further training he joined the 3rd FAB on August 10 and was allotted to the 8th Battery. On October 10, 1917 Arklay was made acting bombardier before being promoted bombardier on June 26, 1918. In April 1919, he returned to Australia aboard the Boonah which reached Melbourne on June 8. Arklay was discharged in Brisbane on July 29.
