Educator. He was the third President of Oregon Agricultural College, which is Oregon State University in the 21st century. During the American Civil War, he served as a sergeant in the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was among the soldiers who found the Special Order of 191 or "Lee's Lost Dispatch." This document, which was issued by Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee on September 9, 1862 during the Maryland Campaign, was lost and later recovered on September 13th by the Union Army. This acquired military intelligence played an important role in the Battle of Antietam. He earned an A.B. degree with honors in 1860 from Hanover College, and starting 1865, he studied medicine at Ohio Medical College. Following the war, he began a successful educational career as the superintendent of the Indiana city schools of Evansville from 1875 to 1880 and Muncie from 1883 to 1886. He was promoted to the State Superintendent for Public Instruction for Indiana from 1880 to 1882. After relocating to Kansas, he was the superintendent of school for Topeka from 1886 until relocating to Oregon in 1892. His wife died in Topeka during a typhoid epidemic. He served from 1892 as the 3rd President of Oregon Agricultural College, retiring four years later when his health declined. He married twice and with his first wife, he had a son and a daughter.
