Mr. Crumpton graduated from Manhattan High School in 1942.
He served in the Marines during World War II from 1942 until 1945. Bus was highly decorated, among his awards he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Presidential Unit Citation. After the war he attended KSU in Manhattan, receiving a B.S. and a M.S. in Physical Sciences with a major in Geology.
Mr. Crumpton was the Chairman of a number of Transportation Research Boards and Strategic Highway Research Program Committees in the field of concrete and corrosion in his capacity as Engineer of Research for the Kansas Department of Transportation where he worked for 37 years between 1951 and 1988 as a Geologist and Engineer. During his work career Mr. Crumpton was an author of dozens of Scientific and Engineering Papers related to his Research work which were published in National and International Journals.
He is survived by his children, Curtis M. Mitch Crumpton of Manhattan, Carla F. Tankin of Newburg, MO and Jeff A. Crumpton of Houston, TX; step-children, Paul A. Hungerford and Sheryl A. Hungerford both of Topeka and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Roblyer Hungerford Crumpton in 1978.
Also preceding him are his parents and all seven of his brothers and both of his sisters.
Cremation is planned. A graveside memorial service and military honors will be held at 3:00 pm Friday, August 17th at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude s Children s Hospital in care of Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas, Topeka, KS 66608.
