The funeral services were held at the Episcopal Church on Sunday afternoon and the remains sent east to his old home in Maryland, accompanied by his son, Col. S. W. Downey, there to repose beside those of his wife of his youth and the friends who have gone before, til the last trump shall summons him to the resurrection of the Lord".

William O. Downey is Colonel Stephen Wheeler Downey's brother. William O. died on 28 Feb 1883 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is buried in the same cemetery as the others are. He was buried on the 4th of March.
