1924 - 2012
Rev. Melvin G. Abney, 87, of Spencer, Ind., formerly of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2012, in Indiana University Health in Bloomington.
He was born December 31, 1924, in Bellepoint, Ky., to the late Green Monroe and Effie Jane Henderson Abney.
He was a graduate of Trevecca Nazarene College. Melvin served during World War II in the Army. He was a faithful member of Cloverdale Church of the Nazarene. The Reverend Abney was a retired Church of the Nazarene minister who served for 50 years in Gosport, Patricksburg, the Eastern Kentucky District, Spencer and the Tennessee District. He was also a former trustee at Mount Vernon University in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Bowen Abney; a son, Harrison Abney; and eight brothers and sisters, Hugh, Lonnie, Rowena, Christine, James, Fanny, Willard and May.
Reverend Abney is survived by his children, Lillian (Bill) Pursell of Spencer, Jonathan (Cathy) Abney of Ashland, Ky., and Randel Abney of Spencer; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2012, at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Pastor Andy Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in Chambersville Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
