David Heckle Cortelyou from Staten Island and Its People, by Leng & Davis, Vol. III, 1930.

David was the son of Lawrence and Elizabeth Heckel of New York. He was a student at the Eastman Academy in Poughkeepsie where he was a roommate of Cornelius Vanderbilt. It is said he left the family home in 1861 without his parents knowledge and joined the Union Army during the beginning of the Civil War. He enlisted in the 6th NY Cavalry in Manhattan, Sept. 18, 1861. He was Corporal, Sergeant and Sergeant Major of this unit until April 6, 1864 when he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant. He was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor June 3, 1864 and remained in the hospital until March 16, 1865 when he was mustered out. On May 15, 1867 he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of the 9th Cavalry, then 1st Lieutenant on Aug. 18, 1867 and was given command of Co. G, 6th Cavalry. He then was ordered back to his old unit and was given command of Co. E, 9th Cavalry until his retirement Dec. 15, 1870 as Captain of Cavalry.

After the war he returned to Staten Island and elected county clerk of Richmond County and held that position for three years and was also justice of the peace. He was later secretary of the Richmond County Mutual Insurance Co. and president of the Westerleigh Building and Loan Assoc.

He married on Sept. 9, 1872 to Mary L. Crocheron, daughter of Stephen and Anna Eliza Decker Crocheron. They were the parents of four children.
