Thomas B. McAdams, Former Banker Of Richmond, Dies In Baltimore

Thomas Branch McAdams, a former executive vice president of State–Planters Bank of Richmond, died Tuesday night in Baltimore where he had lived since 1933. He was 78.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. The family has requested the flowers be omitted.

Mr. McAdams was born in Richmond November 12, 1879. He was educated in private schools and received a master of arts degree from the University of Richmond in 1898. He was a member of the board of trustees of the University of Richmond for many years.

Began Career Here

He began his business career with Merchants National Bank in Richmond. In 1925 he resigned as senior vice president of Merchants National Bank to become executive vice president of State-Planters Bank and Trust Company.

Mr. McAdams left Richmond in 1933 to become president of Union Trust Company of Maryland in Baltimore. He later became chairman of the board and retired in 1953.

He also had been associated in Richmond with Thomas Branch Company, and Scott and Stringfellow. He was a former director of National Radiator Company and United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company.

Mr. McAdams was a former president of Virginia Bankers Association, the Association of Reserve City Bankers and the American Bankers Association.

He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia and a former president. During World War I he was Virginia Director of the national war savings campaign and a member of the Liberty Loan executive committee. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Club, the Maryland Club and was a thirty-second degree Mason of the Scottish Rite.

In 1906 he married Miss Edna Harris McClure(sic) of Chester, S.C. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. John S. Davenport III of Richmond, Mrs. B. Frank Deford Jr. and Mrs. Churchill Gibson Carey of Baltimore, and a son, Dr. George B. McAdams of Hartford, Conn.

Colonel Thomas Branch McAdams

Colonel Thomas Branch McAdams was born, in Richmond, Virginia, 12th November, 1879.

His early education was acquired at the McGuire School, Richmond, and at Richmond College, where he graduated at the age of eighteen, an unprecedented event, receiving at that time the degree of Master of Arts. He stood foremost in his class at the time of graduation, giving the promise of an exceptional future.

For one year after graduation, he was employed as clerk in the Merchants National Bank, leaving his position to enter the employ of Thomas Branch and Company. He remained with this firm for about five years, when, in December, 1903, he re-entered the employment of the Merchants National.

His ability there won rapid promotion, and, in March, 1904, he was made assistant cashier, and in February, 1906, as the unanimous choice of the Board of Directors, was elected to the office of cashier.

Colonel McAdams is very prominent socially, is colonel on the staff of Governor Swanson, of Virginia, and a Mason of high degree.

He married in Charlotte, North Carolina, 9th October, 1906, Edna Harris McLure, the daughter of Edward Conrad McLure of South Carolina.

They have issue :
