In 1912, Julius along with his brothers Louis (1881-1963), Harry (1884-1967), and Clarence (1895-1976) founded the Johnson Brothers Motor Company in Terre Haute, Indiana. They made small motors for lawn mowers and other uses. In 1918, they invented the Johnson Motor Wheel for bicycles. The name of the company was changed to the Johnson Motor Wheel Company.
In 1921, they changed the name again to the Johnson Motor Company and began manufacturing outboard motors for boats.
By 1928, they were the largest manufacturer of outboard motors in the world. Since then the name "Johnson" has been synonymous the marine outboard motor.
