Lucille Alessandroni Donahue, formerly of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, Virginia, an Army wife and mother of six, died at her son, Timothy's home in Mechanicsville, Va., Sunday, May 6, two days before her 93rd birthday.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and her husband, Joseph P. Donahue. She was born Lucille Virginia Alessandroni on May 8, 1919 in Washington D.C. to Joseph Alessandroni and Salina Asprino Alessandroni.
Raised in West Philadelphia, she graduated from Overbrook High School in 1937. On January 16, 1943 she married Joseph P. Donahue, also, of Philadelphia.
While her husband pursued a career as an Army officer, she raised their children on military bases in the U.S. and in Guam, Germany and Greece. Wherever she lived - even in military housing, she created an attractive home for her family and made many lifelong friends.
When her husband retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel in 1964 they moved to Northern Virginia living in Annandale and Fairfax City. They also lived in Great Neck, N.Y. from 1974 to 1976 before permanently settling in Lake of the Woods in 1977. After raising her family, she worked 13 years for the U.S. State Department, as a passport adjudicator.
An avid reader, traveler and gardener, she was former president of the Lake of the Woods Garden Club.
She is survived by daughters Kathleen Mae Bruyere and Lucia Ann O'Dwyer; sons, Joseph Paul Donahue Jr., Paul Terrence Donahue, Timothy John Donahue, and Matthew Sean Donahue; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Requiem Mass will be held at Church of the Redeemer Catholic Church, Mechanicsville, Va., 23116, June 14, 9:30 a.m. followed by a graveside service at Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m.
