Jay was the eldest of six children. Now deceased are his parents, Henry and Philomene Ahmann; two of his brothers, Donald and Stanley Ahmann; and a sister, Jean Sandman. One brother, Thomas Ahmann, and a sister, Mary Drag, survive him.
He is also survived by his three daughters, Leanette Wolfe of Rancho Palos Verdes, Patricia Price of Beverly Hills, and Christine Dumelle of Placentia; as well as his four grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher, Kimberly, and Wendy; and five great- grandchildren, Avery, Abigael, Connor, Jack, and Sarah.
Jay was born 90 years ago in Struble, Iowa, and spent his early years in the Middle West.
During WWII he served as an electronics instructor for the Army Air Force and later for the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he settled in California where he followed a career in aviation electronics, finishing as Director of the Western Region for the Avionics Division of Bendix Corporation.
He moved to Ocean Hills after his retirement and participated in a variety of activities while his health permitted. Among his favorite was his involvement with the North County Concert Association. In addition, he helped found the audio-visual club of Ocean Hills Country Club.
Inurnment took place Tuesday, September 3, at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, following Mass at the Church of Saint Thomas More.
Jay was devoted to his wife, Amber, and to his religion. He was a man of quiet dignity and deep integrity. Those who knew him found him unfailingly courteous and polite, yet possessing a lively, though subtle, sense of humor. He was truly a "gentle" man and will be missed.
Gifts, in honor of Jay, may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 1, Chicago, IL 60601-7633. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com Published in North County Times on September 19, 2008
