Little is known of Mary's father, John Seiffart. Although Mary's mother, Marit Knudsdatter Ostrem, later married Peter Ramsay, Mary appears to have been raised by her grandparents, Knud Eivindsen Kari Christofersdatter (Heen) Ostrem.

Mary married Carl Lien 24 Apr 1878 and they had eight children.
