Obituary from the Fairbanks, Alaska "Daily News-Miner" newspaper, dated Wednesday, May 16, 2012, page B-2:

Matt Seekatz, beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather, was called to God at age 51.
Matt passed on at his Summit Lake home, approximately, May 5, 2012. Matt was born July 13, 1960, in Moses Lake, Wash., to John and Ellen Seekatz. He was the first born of his siblings.

In 1964, at age 4, he and his family moved to Fairbanks, where Matt spent his life living the Alaska dream. Matt went to Main School in Fairbanks during the pipeline construction era. He graduated from Lathrop High School in 1978. As a young adult, Matt worked for Saupe Chevron until it was sold. Then Matt completed the IBEW apprenticeship and became an industrial electrician working throughout Alaska.

Matt had his only son, Mathew "Ryan" in January 1989. Matt later found the love of his life. Matt and Karen Perrin were married in 1998. They were almost always together and their love for each other always showed. They lost one child to premature birth.

Matt loved the outdoors. He was not just an outdoor enthusiast, he would have been a mountain man, but was simply born too late. Matt spent most of his time at his favorite place, Summit Lake where he built one of the first cabins on the hill overlooking Summit Lake in the early 1980s. By that time, he developed an incredible talent for all things outdoors, including riverboating, hunting, fishing, snowmachining and more. All the while, bringing his son, Ryan, and brother, Nick (and anyone else who would follow) with him.

Matt was a natural eagle eye and an expert marksman. He always ran full throttle, with great enthusiasm for life, adventure and travel. In 2000, Matt and Karen bought their 40-foot boat in Washington and motored it up the Inside Passage to Valdez. This was Matt's favorite voyage. Every year since was spent fishing, hunting, exploring and enjoying the company of friends and loving family. It's not possible to summarize all the fun-loving time he shared with others and the depth of his character.

Matt is survived by his loving wife, Karen Seekatz, who is eternally grateful to Matt. He kept his promise to love her all the days of his life and to hold hands until the very end. She expresses she will miss his loving smile, long soft red hair and his uncanny ability to tell every story with a humorous twist. Matt also is survived by: his son, "Ryan" Seekatz and partner, Kenzie Snyderman; granddaughter, Zipporah, and soon to be born grandson; his stepdaughter, Crystal Perrin and partner, John Miller, and granddaughter, Aubry; his sister, Kelly Seekatz and husband Joseph Morrow, their three children, and three grandchildren; his brother, Nick Seekatz and wife Corrie, and their daughter, Ellen Marie Seekatz; his brother, Christopher Dahl and wife Amanda, and their four children.

Matt was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Marie Vandeventer-Seekatz-Dahl, and father, John L. Seekatz. We will all miss you Matt, husband, dad, brother. "Here's to ya."

The public is invited to Matt's remembrance and gravesite services to be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2012, at Jubilee Worship Center 541 Third St., Fairbanks, then Northern Lights Memorial Park, 2318 Yankovich Road. Pastor Davis Harbour will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you bring the gift of pictures and stories of your memories with Matt. These also can be emailed to [email protected]. Published in Daily News-Miner on May 16, 2012.
