Talkeetna resident Mary Louise Growney Strong, 72, died peacefully in her sleep June 18, 1999, at home in Talkeetna.
Ms. Strong was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Oakland, Calif., to William C. and Bernardine (Wittschen) Growney. She graduated from Berkeley Graduate School in Berkeley. She lived in Berkeley until she married Paul Strong in 1949. Together, they raised four children. Ms. Strong first came to Alaska in 1965. She and her husband settled in Kenai and lived there for 18 months before returning to California so Paul could finish college. They lived in Livermore, Calif., and remained there until 1982. During that time, she worked in the newspaper field, volunteered, and maintained a home. In 1982, Ms. Strong returned to Alaska to be near her children who moved back in 1980. By then, she and her husband had divorced, but remained good friends. She stayed in the newspaper business and continued to extend her family of friends. When she retired in 1993, she moved for the last time to Talkeetna, to live with her daughter. There, she did volunteer teaching. Her family said: ''Her biggest satisfaction in life was her family and extended family. She had many people who entered her home as strangers and remained in her life as friends. Although she had four biological children, she had many people whom she called her 'kids' and who felt like she was 'mom.' Her door was never locked and her heart was never closed to others. Within minutes of talking to her, your day had improved. She had a warm heart and a happy laugh and an adorable smile that brightened those who met her. She felt that life is meant to be enjoyed.''
