My Grandfather, whom I never knew. He immigrated to this great country with his parents and siblings from Italy. He served with the United States Army during World War I with the 310th Infantry Regiment of the 78th Division, where he was gassed at the Battle of the Argonne Forest.

He was the co-owner, along with his brothers, of the Russo Inn/Tavern, which was located on Remsen Avenue in New Brunswick, NJ until a squabble with his brothers ended his affiliation. Married Janet Zotti and fathered three boys, Frank (my Father), Anthony and Romolo. All three brothers would go on to serve in the Armed Services during World War 2. He and Janet eventually divorced. (Janet would go on to marry Camille DeLena, my mother's oldest brother, and have two daughters with him). Joe eventually became a Court Attendant in New Brunswick Superior Court, where he was highly regarded. He had many friends who fondly remembered him.

I was told by my dad that my grandfather was very generous and caring, and a very proud grandfather to my brother Joseph, who was named after him. My dad also told me that "Grandfather Joe" loved the Yankees, especially the Italian-American Players on the team like Tony Lazzeri, Frankie Crosetti, and of course, the Great Joe DiMaggio.

My Grandfather sadly passed away on Christmas Eve of 1950 at the age of 57. He is buried next to his Father, Francesco, who died in 1915 and his Mother Santine. To the other side of him rest his brothers Anthony and Romolo, for whom two of his sons were named after.

My Grandfather's grave has remained unmarked since his death, but for a temporary marker that I placed almost 15 years ago. This marker has been moved by cemetery workers many times when they have cut the grass. Almost every time, they have failed to put it back, again leaving his grave unmarked. This will be rectified when I finally pay for a new flat marker for his grave, which will state his military service along with his name and dates of birth and death.

I will always regret never getting the chance to know my Grandfather. Hopefully I will get to meet him one day in Heaven. If I do make it there, I am going to wrap my arms around him, kiss him, and say, "Hi Grand Pop, I'm the grandson you never knew".
