SAM MUERY, AGE 72, DIES IN Dallas
Was President of Local Wholesale Grocery
Sam H. Muery, president of the Brenham Wholesale Grocery Co. and prominent Brenham business man for many years, died in a hospital at Dallas Friday morning at 1:30 o'clock. He was 72 years old. Mr. Muery had been in poor health for a number of years. He was stricken with a hemorrhage of the stomach while attending the Texas Wholesale Grocers Association convention in Dallas Wednesday afternoon. Taken to a hospital, he underwent two blood transfusions, but failed to rally and death came after midnight.
Did Not Attend
It had been Mrs. Muery's custom to attend the conventions with her husband, but this year for the first time, she remained at home on advice of her physician. When Mr. Muery did not rally from the blood transfusions, she left for Dallas by automobile with Dr. Thomas Giddings, but failed to arrive before the end came. C. D. Dallmeyer, secretary-treasurer of the Brenham Wholesale Grocery Co. and Mrs. Dallmeyer were with Mr. Muery at the convention. The body is being returned to Brenham by the Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Muery had been active in the affairs of the Brenham Elks lodge for may years. He was also greatly interested in the affairs of the First Christian Church of which he was chairman of the official board. He was born on a farm near Kenney, in Austin county on February 3, 1885, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Muery. The family moved to Washington county in 1897, settling on a farm at Gay Hill. There, young Muery grew up as a farm youth, attending school at Gay Hill.
Up Through Ranks
As a young man, he came to Brenham as an employee of the F. A. Windhausen grocery store. Later he became a shipping clerk for the Brenham Wholesale Grocery Co. and came up through the ranks to become president of the company upon the death of H. W. Dippel in 1938.
