Chas J Swift Passes Away

Well Known Citizen and Member Columbus Bar Died Saturday

Stroke Paralysis Proves To Be Fatal

Funeral To Be from Home of Mr and Mrs J P Kyle Sunday Afternoon and Be Attended by Local Bar.

Mr. Charles Jewett Swift, aged 65 years, died at the city hospital Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, following an illness of a few days, caused by paralysis. Mr. Swift was attacked Thursday night, and became unconscious while on Broad Street, and he was carried to the hospital, where he passed away without regaining consciousness.
Mr. Swift suffered a slight stroke of paralysis some weeks ago and he had never regained his usual health when the last - and fatal - attack came. He had been confined to his room for some time and had only been getting out at intervals. He never was really at himself after the first stroke.
Mr. Swift was a member of one of the pioneer families of Columbus, being a son of the late Col. and Mrs. G P Swift. He was born at Wynmanville, Ga., and came to this city with his parents in 1865, and he has spent most of his life here. He received his education at Frankfort, Ky., later completing it at the University of Georgia. Following his school days he went into the office of the late Governor James M Smith, where he read law. Later he went to San Francisco to pursue his chosen profession, being connected with several prominent law firms.
When in the prime of life, he was married to Miss Justina Alcorn, daughter of Governor Alcorn, of Mississippi.
He resided in the west for some time. Later he moved back to Columbus, where he spent the last seventeen years of his life. While in Columbus, he gained the friendship of scores, and there were very few who were as well known and held in higher esteem than he.
Mr. Swift took an active interest in the affairs of the city and while he held no public office, he gave much of his time and talent to its affairs and was always interested in the upbuilding of Columbus.
Surviving Mr. Swift are his wife: two daughters, Mrs. Jefferson Rinon of Danville, Va., and Miss Jewtte Swift, of Memphis, Tenn.; one son, Mr. Alcorn Swift, of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters. Mrs. J P Kyle, of Columbus, and Mrs. Jas. H Shorter, of Macon, and one brother, Mr. Ed W Swift, of Columbus.
The funeral will be conducted from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J P Kyle, 303 Twelfth street, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Dr. W A Carter, assisted by Dr. I S McElroy, will conduct the services, and the remains will be laid to rest in the family lot at Linwood cemetery. The Columbus Bar association will attend the services in a body.
The following have been selected to serve as the pallbearers: Messrs. L H Chappell, L M Lyhnch, W R Blanchard, C A Lovelace. E M Wheat and G Y Tigner.
