Son of Capt. Abiel C. Clapp and Bathsheba Pratt who were married on April 6, 1758 at Norton, Bristol, Massachusetts.


Abiel was b. 07 Feb 1728 at Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States and d. 20 May 1780 (accidentally shot while on parade) at Mansfield, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA.


Bathsheba was b. 07 Mar 1737 at Norton, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States and d. 1771 • Mansfield, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States.


When very young he volunteered to serve as substitute for one who had been drafted for the expedition for expulsion of the British troops from Rhode Island, was appointed a non-commissioned officer, and remained in the service until honorably discharged.

Asa's mother Bethsheba died in 1768 in Mansfield and in 1771 his widower father 2nd m: SUSAN "Susa" (CASWELL), b.1746, Norton, MA, d.1835, Mansfield, ME. On 6/6/1780 Asa's paternal uncle, ELEAZER CLAPP, was appointed by Bristol Court as Guardian of Asa, along with his siblings ELKANAH, BATHSHEBA and SUSA CLAPP, all still slightly under aged at the time of their father's death. In 1787 in Portland, ME Asa m: ELIZABETH WENDELL (QUINCY), b.1764, Braintree, MA, d.11/1853, Portland, ME, with whom he had children, a daughter of Dr. Jacob Quincy and Elizabeth (Williams) of Boston, MA.


In 1788 Asa was a volunteer who took part in the expulsion of the British from RI, served in Capt. Crows' Co., Col. Doggetts Regmt. in RI. Asa went on to be a ship owner/sea merchant/trader in the West Indies, becoming the wealthiest man in Portland for his time. In 1812 he invested in government securities to help subsidize the war effort.


They resided in the pillared mansion which is now affiliated with the Portland School of Art, next to the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, ME, where a portrait of him is on display. His schooner Susan, named after his stepmother, was berthed at Widgery's Wharf in Portland, ME; Henry Small was his ship master.


Asa was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1820-1823.
