Son of Daniel Dewey, a judge on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and later a Congressman from Williamstown, and Maria Noble.
Graduated Williams College in 1811. After graduation he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1814. Practiced primarily in Berkshire County, MA & Bennington County, VT. He remained in Williamstown for 11 years before moving to Northampton to practice law with his brother-in-law, Isaac C Bates.
In 1823 and in 1825, he was elected to the Mass. House of Representatives and in 1830 to the Mass. Senate.
From 1830 to 1837, served as the District Attorney Western District
When a 5th justice was authorized for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 1837, he was appointed to the post. He was actively serving as a justice at the time of is death in 1866. His specialty was criminal & statute law.
In 1840, Harvard conferred an LL.D (doctorate in law)
He served as a trustee and as the secretary of Williams College
He married Frances Aurelia Henshaw on 16 May 1820 in Northampton, MA. They had one son, Francis Henshaw Dewey.
He married Caroline Hannah Clinton on 28 July 1824 in Newburg, NY
His youngest son, George Clinton was discharged from the service (served during Civil War in NY hospitals) with "ship fever"; his mother caught it and both died.
He was survived by sons Francis H, practicing law in Worcester, and Charles A, a judge in Milford, MA; and three daughters, Mrs Daniel Wells Alvord of Greenfield, Mary Clinton Staples (Mrs HB) of Worcester, and Maria Noble Dewey (unmarried).

Dewey Hall at Smith College was purchased from the Dewey family in 1871. It was built by Thomas Pratt on Elm Street in 1827; moved to the current site of Seelye Hall in 1875; and then moved to Neilson Drive in 1896.
