Religious Leader. A native of Vienna, he studied at the Seminary ot Krems, at the Seminary of Sankt Pölten and at the University of Vienna, where he received a doctorate in theology, on March 10, 1883. He was ordained priest on July 14, 1878, in Vienna. From 1878 to 1882, he did pastoral work in the archdiocese of Vienna. In 1882 and 1883, he served as Chaplain of Santa Maria dell' Anima, an Austrian church in Rome. From 1883 to 1885, he taught philosophy and exegesis at the Seminary of Sankt Pölten. Then, from 1885 to 1887, he acted as Chaplain at the Imperial Court, in Vienna. and as Spiritual director of the Augustinianum College, in that same city, from 1887 to 1889. Then, he went to Rome to be Rector of Santa Maria dell'Anima, this from 1889 to 1902. He was named Protonotary apostolic ad instar participantium, on March 9, 1893 and made Canon of the cathedral chapter of Vienna. On June 15, 1902, in Rome, he was consecrated bishop of Trieste and Capodistria. He was promoted to the titular see of Tiro and appointed coadjutor of Vienna, with right of succession, on January 19, 1910. . He succeeded to metropolitan see of Vienna, August 5, 1911. Pope Pius X created him cardinal, on November 27, 1911. He was Counselor to Emperor Franz Josef and a member of the Chamber of Lords and of the Landtag. He passed away in his episcopal city.
