MARY ELIZABETH SWANN FUCHS, 99, died May 24, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Memphis.

She was married to the late Leo D. Fuchs for over 40 years.

Mary Elizabeth was a nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital downtown until her retirement 34 years ago. She was the head nurse on each floor of the now-imploded facility and supervised the opening of each of the floors as they were added to the hospital during construction. She loved her work and her calling as a healer and remained friends with many of the young nurses she mentored over the years.

She was an active member of Bellevue Baptist Church and staffed the on-site health care facility as a volunteer on Sundays until her health no longer permitted.

She was a gentle sweet soul whose medical ministry will long be remembered by the legions she served during her lengthy career.

Mary Elizabeth is survived by her stepsister, Agnes Swann Newman of Sevierville, TN; and 16 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Sanford, Roy, and Amos Swann, and one sister, Edna Swann Wells.

A graveside service will be at Memorial Park Cemetery
