ANDERSON, Major Ian Wentworth, M.S.M., RNZA - 35,
an Antigonish native who won a medal for bravery in Bosnia,
died Friday, July 5, 1996, while serving with the Royal New Zealand artillery
near Waiouru, New Zealand.
Maj. Ian Wentworth Anderson, a former Canadian Armed Forces peacekeeper,
migrated to New Zealand one year ago.
He continued his military career at the Waiouru Military Base on the nation's North Island.
Maj. Anderson was a gunnery instructor with a speciality in field artillery at the Waiouru Base.
He was second in command for 12 months and was recently promoted to chief-instructor in the school of artillery.
Maj. Anderson was running a technical exercise in a marine helicopter Hughes 300 when the accident occured.
Born in Sherbrooke, Guysborough Co.,
he was the son of Alexander Murray and Edith Mildred (Kaiser) Anderson, Sherbrooke.
Maj. Anderson was educated in New Glasgow, Antigonish and attended University of Kings College, Halifax.
After joining the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1980,
he served in Gagetown, N.B., St. John's, Nfld., Val Cartier, Que. and Ottawa.
Maj. Anderson was wounded while serving as a United Nations peacekeeper in the former Yugoslavia when his armored personnel carrier hit a mine.
A subsequent battle occurred and for his bravery and leadership Maj. Anderson was awarded the Meritorious Services Medal by Governor General Ray Natyshin in 1992.
After his release from the Canadian Armed Fources,
Maj. Anderson accepted an appointment from the Royal New Zealand Artillery as chief gunnery officer for the New Zealand army.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his fiancee, Bess Tsakris, Laval, Que;
brothers, Sandy, Masstown;
James, Sherbrooke;
sister, Suzanne, Vancouver, B.C.;
nephews, John, Andrew, Eugene, Reid;
niece Emma;
many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will miss Ian's billiance, generosity and wonderful surprises.
Arrangements are entrusted to H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow
and are as yet incomplete.
The family will receive friends 1-9 p.m today, Wednesday and Thursday at their family home,
8217 Main St., Sherbrooke.
