Mrs. Autherene Sermons Lee, 59, of 2 Kim Ct. #3, Columbus died Monday, October 11 at home. A celebration of life for Autherene Sermons Lee will be held Monday, October 18 at 12:00 P.M. at Peaceful Holiness Church, 4944 Buena Vista Road, Columbus. Bishop Thomas Mott will officiate with Elder Lewis C. Clemons as eulogist.
~Mrs. Lee was born June 7, 1945 in Hahira, Ga., to the late Johnnie Benjamin Sermons, Jr. and Arizona Stewart Sermons. Interment [followed in Evergreen Memory Gardens Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia] according to Sconiers Funeral Home, Columbus. Visitation at the funeral home with a family hour followed by the Chi Eta Phi Nursing Association Memorial Service.
~She received her formal education in Lowndes County, Ga., graduating from Westside High School, Valdosta, Ga. in 1963 and from Albany State University, Albany, Ga. in 1968. She did additional studies at the University of Maryland, Frankfurt, Germany, Georgia Southwestern College, Americus, Ga., and Columbus State University, Columbus.
~She was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Evan Lee on May 6, 1967. To this union one son, Xavier Benjamin Lee was born. She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age, uniting with the Rocky Hill Church of God in Christ, Mineola, Ga., later joining Word of Truth Church of God in Christ and Wynnton Road Church of God in Christ, Columbus. She served faithfully as Youth Director, church mother, and member of the Young Women's Christian Council.
~Autherene's passion was to help which she fulfilled by being a most caring and compassionate nurse. She began her nursing career at South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta. She was also employed at The Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, medically retiring from West Central Georgia Regional Hospital in Columbus. In 1978 she co-found The Columbus Metro Black Nurses Association. In 1981 she found The Columbus Georgia Lupus Society. She organized the Columbus Georgia Chapter of the Blind and served as chairman of the Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities. She was an honorary member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority. She received numerous civic awards throughout the years.
~Those cherishing her memories are a son, Xavier Benjamin Lee, Columbus; her mother Missionary Arizona Sermons, Hahira; four sisters, Geneva (Robert) Miley, Adel, Ga., Sandra (Willie) Clark, Decatur, Ga., Johnsie (Gregory) Banks, Hahira, and Julia Sermons, Columbus; three brothers, Alvester (Jessie) Sermons, Hahira, Henry (Edith) Sermons, Hahira, and Johnnie Benjamin Sermons III, Hahira; two grandchildren, Torrey Howard-Lee, Columbus and Keon Lee of Atlanta, Ga.; four uncles, Deacon Amos (Bessie) Sermons, Palatka, Fla., Elder Arletha (Gladys) Sermons, Hahira, Elder Amos Darring, Jacksonville, Fla., and Mr. Ellis Woods, Valdosta, Ga.; three aunts, Mrs. Sally Sermons, Hahira, Ga., Mrs. Arola Sermons, Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Alma Stewart, St. Louis, Mo.; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
